Not happy and need a change in your career?

As a child you pictured yourself teaching students and helping to shape their futures. You have been a teacher for many years, however you find yourself wanting to do something different, but not sure what that may be. Many people find themselves unsatisfied with their current career asking, “What do I want to do with my life? Is it too late? What is it that I really want to do and finish out my career years?” If this is you, don’t fret, as there are plenty of people that ask these same questions. What can you do to help determine your next move? Here are some tips to help guide you in the right direction and help determine what your next move will be.

Assess your current situation
Ask yourself the following question; do I look forward to going to work or do I live my life for the weekend? I feel my job is self-fulfilling, do I feel trapped in my current position? I have a strong desire to try something else and often daydream about it. I am working in a position at my full potential. Look at your answers as this will give you a better idea if you should make a change or if it’s just something else.

Make a list
It’s important to sit down and write out a list of things that you enjoy in your current role and what things you dislike. This will help guide you into your next career, so when looking at available options you can see if this is something you will have to do in said job.

Research careers
Once you have had time to figure out what you like and dislike and what your true passion might be, it’s time to do some research around your desired position and what it takes.

What skills you have
When doing your research, you will want to make a list of skills you already have under your belt and what skills you might be lacking and what it would take to obtain. This may mean taking some courses or you may have to enroll in college if you’re making a complete career switch.

Ask around
Talk with people in the industry. They will be able to offer you some insight and advice or have potential leads. You may want to contact your alumni or join professional groups to help and expand your network, along with make connections on Linkedin to help make appropriate connections.

Once you have determined your next move, it’s a good idea to seek the assistance of a resume writer. They will know how to create an effective resume and get past any lack in experience and create a resume that will put a spin on the transferable skills that you do have. Making a career change at any stage in life can be a scary thing, but take note in the fact that you’re doing this to better yourself and in the end doing what really makes you happy.
